When you get together with family or friends at a weekend barbecue, it’s easy to overeat. There are plenty of things to munch on and chances are, many of them are high in calories. But there are healthier options that will leave you feeling a lot better once the weekend is over.

Kids have the right idea when they play, but adults tend to sit around. And then, beer, soda, chips, and dips become the game while waiting for the meat to grill. Combine the snacks with all the other food that eventually appears on the table and staying in shape during summer becomes quite a challenge.

Here are some ways to enjoy the summer weather and feel more refreshed when it’s time to get back to business on Monday morning:

1. Play with Others

Join the kids in whatever game they’re playing. If there are no kids or you’re embarrassed to act like one, play with adults. If there’s a hoop in the driveway — well, you know what to do. If that’s not your sport, try throwing around a Frisbee or a ball, or play badminton. If there’s nothing to throw around, try arm wrestling. If there’s a dog around, it will most likely be thrilled if you play with it.

2. Watch Out for High-Calorie Snacks and Drinks

To stave off hunger while the main course is grilling, munch on veggies or fruit instead of chips. If beer is your beverage of choice, try a low-calorie version. If soda is your preference, try sparkling mineral water or plain soda with lemon.

3. Keep Yourself Occupied

If you’re not the grill master, offer to help by cutting up some vegetables, brushing them lightly with olive oil, seasoning them with salt and pepper, and grilling them as an alternative to potato salad, creamy coleslaw, or lettuce covered in creamy dressing.

4. Eat the Meat

Once the meal starts, eat your meat and grilled or raw veggies. If breads, potato salad, and creamy coleslaw are not your favorites, there are no laws that say you must eat them. If you do like them, enjoy in moderation.

5. Savor Fruit for Dessert

Instead of ice cream, try fresh berries, melon, or other fruit in season. Or, grill some apricots or peaches. If you love ice cream, add a small scoop to your fruit.

Weekend barbecues are one of the pleasures of summer. If you enjoy them but don’t overindulge, you’ll start the week in better shape and probably have more fun than expected.
