Choosing the right supplement has become close to impossible. The myriad of choices usually puts us into paralysis by analysis. For every type of supplement, there are usually 10 different choices. Here are two things to look for when deciding on the right one:

1. The right supplement is not adulterated with fillers such as sugar (dextrose), artificial flavors, soy, or vegetable oil and preservatives. Read the fine print and make sure that your gel cap isn’t loaded with any of these “inflammatory” ingredients.

2. The right supplement provides the proper natural form of a plant, herb, or nutrient, as warranted by science. All too often, supplement formulations use incorrect and inferior isolates or ratios—or even synthetic mimics of nature—to replace essential nutrients.

For instance, if you are taking a B-vitamin complex, folic acid, or vitamin E, you might be risking ill health by swallowing these “drugs” disguised as vitamins. None of them accurately mimic the natural forms and have been shown to be risky.

A recent study showed that folic acid supplementation significantly increased breast cancer risk by 32 percent. That’s 32 reasons to get your folic acid from natural source like leafy greens.
