A custom-made membrane that fits around the heart and regulates blood flow may one day keep hearts beating forever, according  researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Washington University. The membrane, which the U.K.'s Daily Mail says is covered with a network of tiny electrodes that monitor heart function, is made using a 3-D printer. It interacts with the body to regulate heart beat, but is much more sophisticated than a pacemaker.
