That’s a question researchers are asking as they focus on how organisms take energy from food and how that impacts weight loss and gain, LiveScience reports.

Growing evidence suggests that bacteria and other microbes impact weight, and studies that examine gut organisms’ role in obesity are under way. Such work may enable scientists to identify people who have a predisposition for obesity and lead to weight-loss strategies targeted for them, according to LiveScience.
