Social Stress Can Lead to Illness

If giving a speech or going to a job interview stresses you, your health may be at risk. A study reported by HealthDay found that stress caused the immune system to respond by amping up the inflammatory processes of people who were in uncomfortable social situations. Repeated stress can cause chronic illness.

"Frequent or chronic activation of the system may increase the risk for a variety of disorders, including asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular disease, and even depression," lead author George Slavich, a postdoctoral fellow at the Cousins Center for Psychoneuroimmunology at the University of California, Los Angeles, said in a news release.
