Locally grown foods have been touted as healthier than those hauled in from thousands of miles away. But are they? Not necessarily, says a HealthDay report. Some foods grown locally, including many types of produce that have water-soluble nutrient such as greens and berries, lose nutrients during shipping.
"The longer produce goes from being picked to being eaten, the more nutrients are lost," said Andrea Giancoli, a registered dietician in Hermosa Beach, Calif. But there are exceptions, she said. Because nuts and beans have a protective covering, they tend to keep their flavor and nutrients even when shipped in.
