Expensive, newer brand-name drugs to lower blood pressure don't work any better than inexpensive, older generics, according to a large Chinese study. More than 33,000 patients with high blood pressure took one of two newer drugs — a calcium blocker or an ACE inhibitor — or an older diuretic, reports HealthDay.
In fact, the diuretic worked better than the ACE inhibitor in preventing stroke, heart failure, and general cardiovascular disease; it also worked better than the calcium blocker in preventing heart failure.
