Newsmaxhealth.com asked New York personal trainer Julian Walker for his insights on how to select a trainer for conditioning and weight loss.

Walker tells us there are five key tips in searching for the best personal trainer.

Here’s what he says:

So you have finally decided it is time to start working with a Personal Trainer. Your choice is important because selecting the right one will take you all the way to your goals and even help you set new ones you never imagined you could reach.

Those seeking out personal trainers should look for five key qualities:

1. QUALIFIED — Three things come into play when determining if someone is qualified. First they may be recommended — word of mouth is the best way to find a trainer that matches your goals. And, there has to be some buzz around them but that has to be backed by Credentials — do they have a reputable certification and/or a degree in the exercise and fitness field. National certifications are best as any club can create their own "certification" and Experience. Look for a minimum of two to five years experience and ask about their areas of specialty. You want to make sure they can handle any injuries or goals you might have.

2. MOTIVATOR — choosing a Personal Trainer usually means one thing, you have a goal and you need help getting there. Make sure they are creative with their workouts and know the trends in Exercise Science. You need someone who can keep you on track while still introducing new goals and milestones.

3. ACCOUNTABLE — this one is simple, is the trainer on time for your first appointment, do they seem responsible and organized? You should feel as if your time is just as important as that of your Personal Trainer

4. ATTENTIVE — are they a good listener, pays attention and isn’t distracted with their own life, schedule. Your Personal Trainer should make you feel like the most important client while they speak to you.

5. FIT — When selecting a trainer it’s a good ideal to work with someone who is fit. If the trainer is fit or has accomplished a major fitness goal then this is a sign of someone who practices what they preach and can help you meet your goals and beyond.

Follow these simple tips and you are on your way to determining the right person to work towards your fitness objectives.
