Diabetes can diminish the joys of life in many ways, and now scientists say it can even wreak havoc in the bedroom.

A study conducted at the University of Chicago Medical Center found that diabetes reduces interest in sexual activity and can lead to erectile dysfunction. In fact, men were more likely than women to grow disinterested in sex, reports WebMD. The nearly 2,000 people studied were aged 57 to 85 and 70 percent of the men and 62 percent of the women with diabetes and sexual partners had sex two or three times a month.

The researchers expressed concern over the fact that few of the study participants reported the problem to their physicians.

"Patients and doctors need to know that most middle age and older adults with partners are still sexually active despite their diabetes," researcher Stacy Lindau, MD, associate professor obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Chicago, said in a statement. "However, many people with diabetes have sexual problems that are not being addressed."
