An AIDS vaccine being tested in clinical trials in Spain is showing success, with 90 percent of the study volunteers developing an immunological response against HIV and 85 percent of them maintaining it for at least one year.
Scientists have developed the vaccine, known as MVA-B, with the hope that it will teach the immune system to combat HIV particles and infected cells, reports Medical News Today.
"MVA-B vaccine has proven to be as powerful as any other vaccine currently being studied, or even more," says Mariano Esteban, head researcher from Spanish Superior Scientific Research Council's National Biotech Centre, which is developing the vaccine with Gregorio Maranon Hospital in Madrid and Clinic Hospital in Barcelona.
After demonstrating a high level of efficiency in monkeys and mice in 2008, testing in humans began a year ago. Now that that the vaccine has shown a high immunological response in healthy humans, testing will begin on those infected with the virus. Scientists want to see if the vaccine can prevent as well as treat AIDS, which affects 33 million people worldwide.
