An exciting, active, and fulfilling sex life can continue beyond age 50, and throughout the rest of your life. “As long as the body is able and the mind is willing, the golden years can truly be platinum when it comes to your sex life,” Dr. Laura Berman, director of the Berman Center in Chicago, told msn.com.
A study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that 73 percent of people 57 to 64 years old were sexually active, along with 53 percent of those aged 65 to 74. Even 36 percent of seniors in the 75 to 85 age group reported being sexually active.
“Your sexuality need not suffer as you age,” Berman said. “Stay dedicated to your sex life and maintain your physical fitness, and you might find that sex only improves as you enjoy your golden years. Remember, there is no such thing as too old for great sex — sexuality is a natural, healthy part of being an adult, regardless of age!”
Use these tips to keep your sex life sizzling, no matter what your age:
1. Control your hormones
Many men experience drops in testosterone levels as they age, making sexual performance more difficult. Erectile dysfunction drugs, such as Viagra, can help. If Viagra doesn’t work for you, don’t give up. Other aids are available, so have a discussion with your doctor.
For women, the amount of estrogen decreases as they age, decreasing libido, but it can be countered by using localized estrogen, which Berman says won’t interfere with the body’s hormones. Natural, non-estrogen solutions include Zestra, a topical oil that may increase arousal, and L-arginine, a supplement which is credited with increasing blood flow to the genital area.
