Honey is a natural wonder food that prevents obesity and lowers the risk of heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.

That’s the assertion of a new book, called "The Healing Powers of Honey, A Complete Guide to Nature’s Remarkable Nectar," by noted health and nutrition author Cal Orey.

“Pure, raw, unprocessed honey is a healthier sweetener than table sugar and high-fructose corn syrup. It's chock-full of antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins — and only has 21 calories per teaspoon,” she writes.

A former writer for Women’s World magazine, Orey has spent the past decade turning out popular health books that have been translated into 20 languages.

Orey’s research — including interviews with doctors, scientists, and beekeepers — led her to learn that Mother Nature's "Nectar of the Gods" has been praised for its healing powers as far back as 5,000 years ago by ancient Egyptians.

“Honey is a superfood, like olive oil. It goes back to Biblical days,” she said in an interview with Newsmax Health from her Northern California home.

Honey can relieve digestive and a host of other ailments, including allergies, coughs, fatigue, pain, and stress, as well as boost libido, Orey says.

She suggests eating a teaspoon or two of honey every day for general health. “I stress moderation,” she says. “You don’t want to overdo it.”

The book offers evidence that eating honey can increase longevity by reducing body fat and unwanted weight associated with heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.

Orey says that while organic honey is the best, even a mass-produced product is good for you.
