Like many people across the country, you’re probably gearing up for Sunday’s Super Bowl game. You’re likely stocking up on snacks and drinks, and looking forward to the action. And while you certainly want to enjoy yourself, be wary of overdoing it — emotionally as well as gastronomically.

One recent study found that watching football raises spectators’ blood pressure compared to watching baseball, while another study showed that a Super Bowl loss for the home team, Los Angeles in 1980 in this case, caused an uptick in cardiac deaths in that city. Here are some ways to savor the big day while safeguarding your heart and waistline.

1. Move around

During timeouts and commercials, get up and walk around, advises Dr. Oz on his website DrOz.com, but don’t head to the buffet table for seconds and thirds. Stand up and stretch, bending over and touching your toes. Periodically leave the room where the game is on to help relieve tension. Moving around and staying limber throughout the game will help make you feel less stress.
