When you eat on the run, don’t let your body run to fat! Even though fast-food companies are more concerned about their bottom line than your spreading bottom, you can still eat fast and healthfully if you follow a few simple rules. Think: smaller, grilled, and green, and add low-fat and whole wheat to your fast-food vocabulary, and you’re set. While you’re at it, avoid these five mistakes:
1. Value meals
Value meals give you a financial incentive to overeat. Be more concerned about the size of your waist than the size of your wallet. Pick and choose the healthiest items on the menu, and avoid the temptation to buy more food just because it may be a good value. (You know you’ll end up eating all those fries.) An extra-value breakfast meal at McDonald’s consisting of a McSkillet burrito with hash browns and coffee starts your day with 760 calories and 45 grams of fat, even if you don’t add sugar and cream to your coffee. However, an Egg McMuffin paired with a Fruit ’n Yogurt Parfait weighs in at just 460 calories with 14 grams of fat.
