The amount of sugar-laden sodas being consumed by Americans continues to grow, and sugary soft drinks have been accused of playing a major role in America’s growing obesity problem. They’ve also been charged with contributing to other major health problems such as heart disease and diabetes.
Is switching to diet colas to cut sugar and calories a good idea? No, says Newsmax contributor Dr. Russell Blaylock: “The major artificial sweeteners are associated with deadly, crippling diseases, including brain tumors, seizures, migraine headaches, and miscarriages.”

Aspartame is a common artificial sweetener, and it is also a dangerous toxin. “It’s cumulative — the more you drink, the more it accumulates in your body,” he says. “Aspartame is metabolized into a number of very toxic compounds, particularly poisonous to DNA and brain neurons.”
Aspartame is associated with several major cancers, including pancreatic, leukemia, lymphoma, and breast.
The artificial sweetener may not even help with weight control, and, in fact, may do just the opposite. “Surprisingly, aspartame has been shown to induce obesity in a substantial number of people,” Blaylock says.
Aspartame has been associated with depression. “One study looking at depressed people drinking aspartame had to be stopped because of people committing suicide,” he said.
The sweetener is disastrous for diabetics, Blaylock says, because it interferes with insulin function and makes controlling blood sugar levels more difficult.
Aspartame is also addicting, and is more difficult to overcome than an addiction to smoking, Blaylock says. “It’s now known that addiction is a glutamate neurotransmission problem. If your food is full of the excitotoxin additives, such as MSG and hydrolyzed proteins, it’s going to make your addiction worse.” Overcoming an aspartame addiction includes avoiding all excitotoxins in food.
Are any artificial sweeteners safe? “Stevia seems to be safe, although it may induce hypoglycemia in some,” he says. “Using a small amount of Sweet’N Low is far less toxic than using these other sweeteners.”
As alternatives, Blaylock suggests drinking purified water or white tea (perhaps mixed with pomegranate tea). “You get accustomed to them and you won’t crave sweetened colas.”
