Sure, there are plenty of medications out there designed to lift us out of depression. But have you ever considered the role your diet plays in how you feel? Foods contain vital nutrients that not only work to preserve our physical health, but they also have a great impact on our moods and overall mental well-being. When we’re deficient in any of these nutrients, the result can be sagging spirits, fatigue, and a generally low feeling.
Be sure to incorporate these foods into your diet so their important vitamins, minerals, and compounds can work to keep you feeling even-keeled and upbeat.
1. Dark chocolate
You already know that chocolate makes you feel good. Its sweet taste and creamy texture are pure pleasure. And knowing about the mood-lifting, heart-healthy benefits of eating dark chocolate are sure to make you feel even better. Studies have shown that eating it can help lower blood pressure and rates of heart disease — that’s something that will make you feel good. Plus, dark chocolate contains mood-lifting compounds like tryptophan, magnesium, and tyramine.
Chocolate with a 70 percent or higher level of cocoa will give you the greatest number of healthy compounds — the darker the chocolate the healthier for you it is. Steer clear of poor-quality chocolate with additives, and don’t feel guilt about indulging in a small piece — about an ounce — a few times a week, the Cleveland Clinic says.
