Want to avoid the health pitfalls that threaten to ruin every holiday season? Here are some simple tips to sidestep five common ailments, accidents, and self-inflicted misery.

1. Weight gain

On average, American adults gain five to seven pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. If you want to start the year without the extra strain on your weight-loss resolution, Cleveland Clinic offers these tips:

• Add 15 minutes to your daily workouts or add one or two days a week if you’re not exercising daily.

• Get seven total servings of fruits and vegetables. You’ll be too full to over-imbibe on rum balls and eggnog.

• If the temptations are impossible to resist, allow yourself just one treat per day.
