There’s a part of your body that plays a role in nearly every movement you make. It’s called your core and it comprises the muscles of your back, sides, pelvis, and rear end. Your core acts as your body’s stabilizer and power booster whenever it’s in motion. The stronger your core, the easier it is to move whether that means walking upstairs, carrying groceries, pushing a lawn mower, or hiking a trail.

How’s your core strength? Does doing everyday chores seem harder than it used to be? It’s never too late to get stronger — and enjoy the added bonus of toner abdominal muscles and a firmer back side.

1. Build strength

According to Harvard Health Publications, only 3 out of 10 American adults exercise enough to stay fit and nearly 4 out of 10 say they don’t do any physical activity. Are you among the inactive? The less you use muscles, the harder it gets to summon them to action. However, by regularly performing core strengthening exercises like these, you are preparing your body to safely be active, whether that means bending down to pick up something without hurting your back, or completing a 5-kilometer fun run with your granddaughter.
