Are your bad-eating habits weighing down your desire to eat better and trim your waistline? Experts say that recognizing what we do to sabotage our efforts is a good first step. The next is replacing those behaviors with others that will help us achieve our goals to look and feel better. Here’s how you can learn to curb your portions, avoid mindless eating, and stop skipping meals — today.

1. Skipping meals

Skipping meals might sound like a good way to cut calories, but experts say it’s not. When you cut out a meal you are likely to become ravenous and then eat much more than you should. If you have diabetes, eating regularly is especially important to keep blood sugar levels steady.

Change of habit: Instead of trying to reduce the number of meals you eat, eat four smaller meals a day or eat every four hours, which is about as often as we get hungry, says registered dietitian and sports nutritionist Nancy Clark. You will be more likely to consume fewer calories and maintain a steady energy level.
