We all experience the blues from time to time, but if feelings of sadness persist, it might be time to try a new strategy. Here are nine things you can do to lift your spirits. However, if you don’t experience relief on your own, consult a physician or therapist.

1. Get more vitamin D

The “sunshine vitamin” might give you a sunnier disposition, according to a recent study by the National Institute on Aging in Baltimore. Many older men and women are insufficient in vitamin D, which might lead to depression, in addition to more frail condition and increased risk of fractures. In the study, women who weren’t depressed at the beginning of the research were twice as likely to become depressed if their vitamin D level was low. Get more vitamin D by exposing yourself to sunlight and consuming cheese, oily fish, and fortified cereals and milk. You’ll boost your mood and your bone health.
