Heat can kill. When summer heat waves bring high humidity along with high temperatures of 90 F and above, it can be a deadly combination. According to the National Weather Service, heat causes more deaths each year than tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, and lightning combined.

Even though children, the elderly, and those with chronic illness are at greatest risk, even healthy people can be susceptible if they exercise too much in the heat and don't drink enough liquids.

Use these nine tips to stay safe:

1. Stay hydrated
Keep your body hydrated by drinking water, even if you don't feel thirsty. A healthy person should drink a pint of water every hour. If you're involved in strenuous activity, drink up to four glasses every hour.
