Question: I am a 68-year-old female who has had a reflux problem for 25 years. I have taken every medication on the market and still have not found one that really takes care of my problem. I try to eat right, and I am not overweight. Am I too old for surgery to correct this problem?

Dr. Hibberd's Answer:

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is usually managed medically, but surgery may be needed in cases where symptoms persist despite medication, and investigation has definitely confirmed that the symptoms are GERD. Surgery in cases of GERD that have been resistant to medication is very successful, and can certainly be done comfortably at your age. Go ahead and make an appointment with your general surgeon! Thanks for your question, and let me know how it goes.
