Question: My son-in-law has had a cancerous growth removed from his colon. The cancer has spread to his lymph nodes and he is about to be given aggressive chemotherapy over a period of six months. He has been told not to take any antioxidants as they may interfere with the chemo. Are there any "natural" substances he can take to lessen the side affects of this procedure?

Dr. Hibberd's Answer:

Patients anticipating or taking chemotherapy have no business "supplementing" their drug programs. They are much more likely to do more harm than good self-prescribing supplements. All supplemental medications should be cleared for use by your oncologist, and in most cases you will be told to discontinue supplements that are not specifically prescribed to be used in conjunction with your chemotherapy. This includes all antioxidants as well as all "natural" products.
