Question: I am a 62 year old woman and have suffered from hypothyroidism for many years. I have never really been able to get the condition under control. In recent years I have mysteriously lost a lot of weight and I’m now down to 94 pounds. I thought having an underactive thyroid would cause me to GAIN weight. Do you have an explanation?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Yes, hypothyroidism is usually associated with obesity. But your weight loss is cause for concern. You need to consult your doctor as soon as possible who will run thyroid tests as well as other tests to make sure there is nothing abnormal even in other parts of your body.
