Question: I have a family history of high cholesterol and my total cholesterol is 456. I have tried at least five statin drugs and they all make me sick, causing muscle and joint pain and flu-like symptoms. I have tried fish oil, vitamin C, CoQ10, and other supplements. What else can I do?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

If you're worried about your cholesterol and the side-effects of statins, start exercising and eating healthier foods. Few natural products have been proven to reduce cholesterol, some might be helpful. Before you try any of the following, please do consult your doctor: artichoke extracts, psyllium, barley, flaxseed, including garlic in your diet, red rice, oatmeal, and fish. Avoid all foods that contain any trans-fat. A combination of exercise and these cholesterol lowering foods might help you lower your cholesterol levels. Check your cholesterol levels every 3 months to know if there has been a reduction in the levels.
