Question: I have small, bright red spots on my chest and upper stomach that look like little blood blisters. What could cause them?

Dr. Hibberd's Answer:

Since there is no obvious cause of your skin condition, it would be wise to have your red spots examined to rule out harmful or co-existing health conditions. These lesions are likely Campbell de Morgan spots (CDMs), otherwise known as superficial hemangiomas. CDMs are symptom- free red spots resulting from a nest of capillaries close to the surface of the skin. They are not caused by irritants or infections. They are a benign skin growth and do not usually need removal except for cosmetic reasons. They occur increasingly especially over the trunk, especially after 40 and do not indicate skin cancer. Removal by laser gives the best cosmetic results, and cryotherapy is also effective, although it may leave mild scarring.
