Question: Many of the men in my family have had cardiac problems and several have died of heart attacks. I’m 47 and so far am in good health, knock on wood. I’ve long been a runner and exercised vigorously. But now that I’m getting into middle age, I wonder if it is too risky for me. What do you think?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

If you've always loved running and exercising, you only have to modify your training program. As you age, your body can become less efficient and more prone to certain injuries and problems, so it's important to talk to your doctor and work on conditioning your body slowly over time. Low-impact cardiovascular activities in conjunction with your running can help you to remain healthy.
