Question: Can a person have normal, low blood pressure and still have a high cholesterol level?

Dr. Hibberd's Answer:

Yes. Blood pressure levels and cholesterol ratios are independent risk factors for vascular disease. There is no direct relationship between these two risk factors, and one will not affect the other. However, some treatments for blood pressure may adversely affect cholesterol ratios.

The discussion regarding pros and cons of treatment choices available is often omitted due to time constraints, but you should make it clear to your doctor that you wish to be an active partner in the selection of your treatment options. Most doctors will encourage your input, so be prepared with a written list of questions when you visit your doctor.

Current cholesterol medications do not usually significantly affect blood pressure. Blood pressure medications, however, do have an impact on your cholesterol. Be sure you know your treatment goals, and try to be an active participant with your doctor in achieving them.
