Question: I’ve had mouth ulcers for over 15 years now. I’m 40 years old and was wondering if you knew a way to control them. I’ve seen many doctors for this condition and none of them seem to be able to offer me a treatment.
Dr. Hibberd’s answer:
Mouth ulcers are sores in the mouth that can cause pain and discomfort, and can be due to numerous reasons. If the exact cause is known, treatment can relieve symptoms. Usually, antihistamines, antacids, corticosteroids, or other soothing preparations may be recommended for applying directly to the ulcer. If no definite cause is known, avoid hot or spicy foods, which often increase the pain of mouth ulcers, and maintain a gentle thorough oral hygiene routine, that includes brushing teeth and rinsing after every meal.
