Dear Dr. Hibberd:

I am an 83 year old man who has been taking the tranquilizer lorazepam for the past two years. I take 1 mg each night to sleep. I come from a family of insomniacs and I get 7-8 hours of sleep with this drug instead of 4-5. I seem to have no ill effects from it. What are your thoughts?

Answer:

It is very important to get a good night rest. At your age, getting habituated to lorazepam is not a cause for worry. You also seem to be tolerating the drug well, so you may continue the medicine under supervision of your doctor. Please do NOT increase the dose without the knowledge of your doctor.
