Question: I am a 28 year old male who suffers from heart palpitations. I have suffered from the papitations which are sometimes skipped beats, irregular heart beats, or a pounding beat followed by three quick beats for about 3 years now. I also sometimes experience this when I lift heavy objects. I had an EKG done about two years ago when my symptoms became bothersome. But during the EKG I did not have any irregular beats or palpitations. Could there be something seriously wrong with me?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Palpitations are usually not serious. However, it depends on whether or not the sensations represent an abnormal heart rhythm due to an underlying heart condition. Since your EKG has been normal, you can try reducing your caffeine intake that can often significantly reduce your heart palpitations. Reducing stress and anxiety can help lessen the frequency or intensity of your heart palpitations. Try breathing exercises or deep relaxation (a step-by-step process of tensing and then relaxing every muscle group in your body) when palpitations occur. Practicing yoga or tai chi on a regular basis can reduce the frequency of your palpitations. Stop smoking, if you do smoke, eat a low-fat diet, well balanced diet and make sure that your blood pressure and cholesterol are under control.
