Question: Can any supplement be taken to prevent hammer toe? What can be done without surgery?

Dr. Hibberd's Answer:

A hammer toe deformity is a claw-like deformity that most often affects the second toe. It often results in a painful callus on the tip of the toe and a corn on the top of the toe. Rarely, several toes may be involved especially when an underlying nerve or spinal cord defect is present.

Hammer toe is usually caused by wearing tight pointed footwear or occurs in children who continue to wear undersized footwear. Its relief is surgical, though temporary relief that may delay surgery can be found with insole and footwear redesign. Consult your orthopedic specialist for options appropriate for you. Not everyone needs to have surgical correction.

No supplements are known to correct this condition, so save your efforts.
