Question: I had two heart valves replaced six years ago. I’m a man in my 70s and I’m taking warfarin. There are long list of things you can’t take while on warfarin, including fish oil, CoQ10, turmeric to name a few. Are there any healthy supplements I can take?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Coumadin (warfarin) therapy does not mean fish oil product cannot be used. If used, your doctor will use Lovaza, which is an FDA approved prescription-only fish oil product that is rigidly quality controlled and may be used to control or reduce lipid risks in cardiac patients. It is effective for those at risk of coronary artery disease, whether they are taking Coumadin or not.
