Question: I’ve been diagnosed with essential tremor and was prescribed the beta-blocker propranolol to get rid of the shakes. But the drug had terrible side effects and made me feel terrible. I am a 70-year-old woman who is otherwise in good health.
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
Essential tremors or the “shakes” is usually not a dangerous condition, but can worsen over time and can be severe in some people. Please do not stop propranolol suddenly, if you are still taking it. Consult your doctor to explore the possibility of taking alternate medications that can also be effective in some people. Have you tried physical therapy? Occupational therapists may suggest some exercise to reduce tremors and improve muscle coordination.
