Question: I have a friend who has neurofibromatosis. Is there a cure? Can the large tumors be permanently removed?

Neurofibromatosis is a genetically inherited disorder that appears as benign tumors of soft, lumpy tissue. Debulking and surgical removal are the only treatments available, and removal does not prevent recurrences. The large tumors are best removed before they adversely affect adjacent bone and soft tissue, though recurrence is common. Children have a 50% risk of inheriting the disorder if either parent has this condition. There is no cure.
