What are some of the causes of night sweats?

Dr. Hibberd’s Answer:

Night sweats are very nonspecific symptoms, but they may relate to an acute illness, a hormone imbalance associated with menopause, or an endocrine disorder. They could also be a sign of serious internal infection, malignancy, or abscess.

Travel history is very important to help us decide if underlying infections related to travel need to be considered. Simple nightmares or active dreams can also leave us in a sweat.

So, the answer covers almost the entire spectrum of disease, and must be correlated with other findings to be more specific. Night sweats are not a normal symptom to ignore, and should justify a visit to your doctor for an assessment.
