Dear Dr. Hibberd:

I have a problem clearing my throat. It seems to be mucus. It is very annoying. Is there any medical treatment for this?

Answer:

Allergy and sinusitis are common causes of mucus at the back of your throat. Sometimes mucus gathers in the back of the throat overnight, and this can be made worse by sleeping with your mouth open and breathing through your mouth instead of your nose. Snoring and breathing through the mouth can also aggravate this problem.

Over-the-counter allergy medications can help, but if the problem continues to persist, you will have to take the opinion of a doctor. You doctor may prescribe antibiotics if there is sinusitis.
