Question: I’ve long had trouble sleeping. About five years ago, my doctor prescribed Ambien and it was a godsend. I take 10 mg every night and sleep like a baby. But I’m concerned about being on this drug for so long. What do you think?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

This medication is usually limited to short treatment periods of one to two weeks or less. This drug can be habit-forming. In rare cases, these medications may cause severe allergic reactions, facial swelling, and unusual behaviors, such as driving or preparing and eating food while asleep. It might be a good idea to wean you off this medication. Additionally, when this medication is used for a long time, it may not work as well. You may have trouble sleeping the first few nights after you stop taking this medication. This is called rebound insomnia and is normal. It will usually go away after 1-2 nights.
