Question: I have had multiple sclerosis for about ten years. For the last three years I have had severe pains in my intestines, and I'm down to 86 pounds. I have been to two specialists and all they say is I have Irritable bowel syndrome along with MS. I'm scared and very worried. Do you have any suggestion?

Dr. Hibberd's Answer:

Three years of abdominal pain and a weight of 86 pounds in any person, with or without MS, implies an urgent need for intervention. There could be innumerable causes, and the first thing to do is to find yourself a physician willing to work with you in solving your serious dilemma. You have taken the first step by recognizing the urgency of your situation. It may be best to consider an inpatient evaluation because of your extremely low weight and the risks associated with weight this low in conjunction with abdominal pain and inadequate nutrition. If your doctor is unwilling to have you admitted, ask the specialists you have seen which hospital ER you should go to for evaluation. This would be my next step to provide a safe environment for your evaluation as well as to correct any immediately life-threatening issues.
