Question: Is glucosamine useful for a patient with a pre-diabetic condition like me?

Dr. Hibberd’s Answer:

Glucosamine is a chemical found in our body that seems to have a beneficial role in the production of cartilage and tendon/ligament health. Supplemental glucosamine sulphate does not affect blood glucose control in people with Type 2 diabetes, but preliminary studies initially suggested that it may promote insulin resistance.

Intravenous glucosamine (not used in the United States) was reported to produce insulin resistance, but further studies involving oral doses have not substantiated that finding. It would seem prudent to monitor your blood glucose values when on glucosamine to be sure you do not worsen your pre-diabetic condition. Though the majority of people in your position does not have problems, err on the side of caution for now and monitor your blood glucose when taking glucosamine supplementation.
