Question: I am a 58-year-old white male. I’ve had high blood pressure and high cholesterol for 25 years and take Lotrel (5/20 milligrams) and Zocor (80 milligrams). I have low testosterone (and take Testim 1 percent), and take Cingular and Zirtec for seasonal allergies.

In the past 12 months, I've experienced a series of symptoms that include swollen glands, sore throat, raspy cough, sores on gums or in nose, muscle aches, fatigue, night sweats, and occasional insomnia. My doctor says that I might have Epstein Barr Virus (EBVA VCA IgG Antibody of 1:640). Are there any long-term effects of EBV?

Dr. Hibberd's Answer:

Let’s consider the possibility of side effects from multiple medications before we start inventing new disorders for you.

You need a careful evaluation of your symptoms and your physical health because the symptoms you describe fit many conditions and need to be fully investigated.

Your test results simply reflect your exposure to the EBV virus at some point in your life, and reveals your body has generated the expected antibody response to EBV (which most of us have by the age of 30). The titre itself would not be significant unless it was triple. Insist on further evaluation of your symptoms
