Question: How can I clear my arteries without surgery?

Dr. Hibberd's Answer:

Arteries can be cleared without surgery as long as the vessels involved have the following characteristics:

1. They are not expected to have a plaque become disrupted or destabilized.

2. They are not affected by an advanced disorder of endothelial dysfunction, such as dyslipidemia, syndrome X, and/or diabetes.

3. They are not inflamed or damaged. (There is no role here for chelation therapy in clearing your vessels, so save your money.)

4. They have a reliable and stable arterial source.

5. They are not being damaged by underlying conditions such as uncontrolled hypertension.

Aggressive intervention strategies to modify risk are very simple and involve doing the following:

1. Stopping smoking

2. Getting regular exercise, both physical and mental, and remaining physically and mentally active

3. Following high-fiber and low-fat diets rich in omega-3 fatty acids (preferably fish oil from a cold water source or the prescription LOVAZA)

4. Managing weight, blood pressure, and body-mass index

5. Optimizing lipid and blood glucose to preventive levels with fasting blood sugar under 100, LDL over 60, and HDL under 80

6. Evaluating for any dietary or hormonal deficiencies with your doctor

7. Using alcohol moderately — no more than two glasses daily of red wine — and avoiding hard liquor

8. Getting enough sleep

Now, watch your weight correct itself and your energy improve along with your quality of life.
