Question: I have multiple autoimmune challenges that have manifested in many ways, such as blood clots in both legs, scarring in one of my eyes, and a life-threatening hemolytic anemia. Now, I have developed sores on my body that have been very stubborn and resistant to treatment.

In addition, I am diabetic, and my kidneys are functioning at a 30.3 level. Would you be kind enough to offer your opinion as to how I can stop further damage to my kidneys and maybe stop the further drop in functioning capabilities?

Dr. Hibberd's Answer:

Kidneys are vital organs in our bodies. Unfortunately, they are susceptible to damage in most autoimmune disorders. You are right to think about strategies to limit further damage.

Since you have diabetes, it is important to work with your doctor to keep your blood sugar levels in check. Also, check your blood pressure on a regular basis. It is vital that your blood pressure remain normal. Your doctor can let you know how you can check your blood pressure at home.

In addition, eat a diet low in fat and salt, exercise most days of the week, avoid tobacco and limit alcohol intake, and be in regular touch with your doctor.
