Question: I am 62 and my thyroid is no longer active. What do you recommend to stimulate normal thyroid function and activity in my body?

Dr. Brownstein's Answer:

The thyroid gland requires adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals to produce thyroid hormone as well as to activate thyroid hormone. I recommend working with a holistic healthcare practitioner who is skilled in the use of natural items. The most crucial items for optimizing thyroid function are selenium, iodine, magnesium, vitamin A, and the B vitamins.

I suggest supplementing (if your levels are low) with selenium 100 to 200 micrograms (?g) a day, iodine six to 50 milligrams a day, magnesium 200 to 400 milligrams a day, vitamin A 5,000 to 10,000 U/day, and a B-100 vitamin. The most crucial of all the elements necessary for thyroid function is iodine. The thyroid gland cannot make thyroid hormone without iodine. Iodine also protects the thyroid from oxidative damage. If iodine levels are inadequate, it can lead to hypothyroidism, autoimmune thyroid disorder, as well as thyroid cancer.
