Question: In your book, you prescribed some patients to take unrefined salt. Should I dissolve the salt in water and drink it, or there are other ways?

Dr. Brownstein's Answer:

In my book I mention that, as a general rule, you can consume approximately ¼ teaspoon of unrefined salt for every quart of water you drink. You can put the salt directly into the water and drink it.

However, that is not the only way to get adequate amounts of unrefined salt in your diet. You also can put it on your food or just eat it during the day. I don’t think it really matters how you get the salt into your body.

Healthy salt (i.e., unrefined salt with its full complement of minerals) is a vital substance for the body. However, I do not feel it is good to ingest all of the salt at one time. It is best to spread it throughout the day.

One suggestion I make to my patients is to place the daily amount of salt (usually about 1 to 1.5 teaspoons a day) in a bowl or Ziploc bag so that you can see it. By the end of the day, it should be gone.
