Question: What are the merits or demerits of sublingual vitamin B12 and how available is it?

Dr. Brownstein's Answer:

I recommend B12-2000 from Biotics Research, which is a sublingual product (it dissolves under the tongue.) I recommend only an oral version of vitamin B12 for people younger than 25 and those with an extreme fear of injections.

Taking Vitamin B12 orally will raise vitamin B12 levels; however, the clinical response is much better with injectable, natural vitamin B12. I find the clinical response with any oral version — be it sublingual or not — does not come close to the positive response seen in injectable vitamin B12.

The price for injectable versus oral B12 is about the same. So, taking all that into account, I strongly suggest using injectable, natural vitamin B12 for any condition that requires vitamin B12.

Vitamin B12 injections do not help everyone. I instruct patients that if they see no improvement after using the 30 injections they should discontinue it. Yet my experience has shown that 80 percent of people improve with natural vitamin B12 injections.
