Question: You have previously written that one can self-administer vitamin B12. Can you tell me how?
Dr. Browstein's Answer:
Vitamin B12 injections are very easy to self-administer, with minimal risk. Of course, with any injection there is some risk of infection and bleeding at the site.
In 20 years of recommending B12 shots to thousands of patients, I have had just one patient develop a minor local infection from a B12 injection. She was treated with a short course of antibiotics and heat to the area, and recovered.
Any physician or nurse should be able to guide you on the proper way to self-administer a B12 injection, which can be given in the arm, leg, or hip.
If you use a subcutaneous needle, the shots can be given in the abdomen as well. I see no difference in efficacy between subcutaneous and intramuscular B12 injections.
