Question: Are there any health concerns with eating natural peanut butter with no added ingredients?
Dr. Blaylock's Answer:
Yes, even natural peanut butter can have unacceptably high levels of a fungus called aspergillus flavus that produces a poison called aflatoxin that is associated with liver cancer. Even though the risk is very low, I would not recommend excessive consumption of peanut butter.
A number of nutrients can reduce one’s risk from this fungus. For example, curcumin, quercetin, ellagic acid, Ginkgo biloba, grape seed extract, and green tea extract can reduce risk.
It is also important to remove the separated oil in the peanut butter and replace with extra-virgin olive oil. Mix it well, and you will find that, unlike other oils, it will not separate from the peanut butter. The extra-virgin olive oil also has many health-promoting effects, including reducing your risk of cancer and atherosclerosis.
