Question: What is magnesium aspartate? Is it beneficial?
Dr. Blaylock's Answer:
Magnesium aspartate is what is referred to as a chelated mineral, which simply means that the mineral is chemically bound to an amino acid — aspartate. This has been shown to significantly improve absorption.
Personally, I do not like magnesium aspartate, because aspartate is an excitotoxin. Yet, the concentration of the aspartate is so low it is of little significance in most people. In some, it may precipitate a headache and have other toxic effects. This has not been adequately studied.
There are safer forms of magnesium — such as a magnesium malate and magnesium citrate/malate. They are also well absorbed.
