More than 23 million people in the United States have diabetes, and 20 percent of all people 60 years old or older have diabetes. An additional 57 million Americans are pre-diabetic.

Naturally, maintaining your diet is absolutely vital in order to control diabetes, but using your diet to keep your blood sugar levels normal means more than simply eliminating sweets from your diet. Add these nutrients to your arsenal to put you in control of your diabetes. For more details read my report "Use Prevention to Take Control of Your Heathcare."

• R-lipoic acid. This is the most potent form of lipoic acid. It is a natural antioxidant found throughout the body, and one of its major effects is to improve insulin function.

• Curcumin and quercetin. These two flavanoids dramatically reduce inflammation, which is how diabetes causes damage in the body.

• Multivitamin/mineral. I use Extend Core, which is a powder in a capsule form and maximizes absorption. Click here.

• Natural vitamin E. The best vitamin E supplements contain mixed tocopherols with high amounts of gamma-type E, which is the anti-inflammatory component.

• Magnesium citrate/malate. Magnesium plays a major role in protecting us from insulin resistance (Type-2 diabetes). Recent studies have shown that it also protects people from developing metabolic syndrome.

• Flavonoids, plant extracts. A number of flavonoids and plant extracts can lower blood sugar and improve insulin function. They include white tea, green tea, ellagic acid, resveratrol, silymarin, beta-sitosterol, hesperidin, cinnamon extract, quercetin, and curcumin.

• Pycnogenol. Pycnogenol protects the blood vessels of diabetics. Damage to blood vessels is very common in diabetes.

• DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). DHA, a component of fish oil, reduces inflammation and is vital for healthy blood vessels. "Omega 3: Nature’s Miracle Panacea" explains the many ways fish oils help improve your health.
